Bistable optical transmission through arrays of atoms in free space

چکیده
We determine the transmission of light through a planar atomic array beyond limit low intensity that displays optical bistability in mean-field regime. develop theory describing intrinsic bistability, which is supported purely by resonant dipole-dipole interactions free space, showing how bistable amplitudes exhibit both strong cooperative and weak single-atom responses they depend on underlying collective excitation eigenmodes. Similarities with cavities are highlighted, while recurrent scattering between atoms takes role cavity mirrors. Our numerics analytic estimates show sharp variation extinction, reflectivity, group delays array, incident completely extinguished up to critical well limit. analysis paves way for nonlinear optics cooperatively responding dense ensembles.

Nanostructure arrays in free-space: optical properties and applications.
Dielectric and metallic gratings have been studied for more than a century. Nevertheless, novel optical phenomena and fabrication techniques have emerged recently and have opened new perspectives for applications in the visible and infrared domains. Here, we review the design rules and the resonant mechanisms that can lead to very efficient light-matter interactions in sub-wavelength nanostruct...
متن کاملStrong polarization in the optical transmission through elliptical nanohole arrays.
Strong polarization dependence is observed in the optical transmission through nanohole arrays in metals. It is shown that the degree of polarization is determined by the ellipticity and orientation of the holes; the polarization axis lies perpendicular to the broad edge of the ellipse. Furthermore, the depolarization ratio shows a squared dependence on the aspect ratio of the holes, which is d...
متن کاملDiffraction effects on diffusive bistable optical arrays and optical memory
Bistable responses of Fabry–Pérot cavities and all-optical arrays, in the presence of weak diffraction and strong diffusion, are studied both analytically and numerically. The model is a pair of nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled through a diffusion equation. The numerical computations are based on a split-step method with three distinct characteristics. This bistable nonlinear system, wit...
متن کاملPhased Array of Phased Arrays for Free Space Optical Communications1,2
An aperture composed of multiple small apertures has several advantages over a large continuous aperture when practical issues are included in the analysis. For example, a single bullet can easily produce a catastrophic failure of the laser communication link if all the optical gain for the transmitter (or receiver) is derived from a single large-diameter telescope. In addition to battlefield c...
متن کاملTheory of extraordinary optical transmission through subwavelength hole arrays.
We present a fully three-dimensional theoretical study of the extraordinary transmission of light through subwavelength hole arrays in optically thick metal films. Good agreement is obtained with experimental data. An analytical minimal model is also developed, which conclusively shows that the enhancement of transmission is due to tunneling through surface plasmons formed on each metal-dielect...
